Capoeira is a form of non-contact self-defense expressed through dance-like movements.
It originated in Brazil among communities of enslaved Africans forced to work on sugarcane plantations. Shackled at the wrists, they developed a fighting style emphasizing leg strength and agility, often "launching" their legs in sweeping, airborne motions to defend against mistreatment by plantation owners.
Elements of dance (samba) and music (percussion and berimbau) were integrated into Capoeira by enslaved individuals, possibly to mask their true intentions, but these elements remain integral to the discipline today. In a circle formation called "roda," where everyone plays and sings with the berimbau (a traditional stringed instrument), the confrontation (known as "jogo") begins between the first two players.
The lesson will serve as an introduction to the world of Capoeira, covering its historical and cultural aspects, as well as teaching basic Capoeira movements.
