The Etruscans came from the sea. And Paolo Ciampi returns to the sea on this journey, which starts from the necropolis of central Italy, crosses Tuscany less affected by mass tourism, reaches the coasts where once dominated the merchants and pirates of the people from which he himself descends. It is a long journey that from the ancient cities of Chiusi and Cortona touches the Val d'Orcia with its postcard sceneries, Monte Amiata with its mystics and its miners, the cities of tuff and tombs, the Maremma of brigands and grave robbers , but also of writers such as Luciano Bianciardi and Italo Calvino, finally the beaches and promontories of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Between chats with friends, large drinks, various digressions, but above all in the company of the Etruscans and their fascinating mysteries. It begins as a journey to rediscover one's roots – to look for what time leaves us anyway, perhaps in the language or in the landscapes. Then the pandemic arrives and another journey begins, immediately after the lockdown: and the Etruscan shadows, incredibly, now seem able to give an answer - and a sense - to what happened to us. Perhaps thanks to their enigmatic smiles.
A book that will make us discover, through our steps, the Etruscans and all humanity that preceded us.
